  • 5 Brazilian Cachaça Cocktails for the Inveterate Drinking Expert

As a young adult, I didn’t know you could have cachaça cocktails.

I would drink it by itself — “pura”, as we say it in Brazil — and that was the way it was.

(there was even a sense of pride in gulping it down with no “softeners”!)

But the older I got, the more culturally aware I became. And knowing that cachaça was a culturally important aspect of Brazil, I started to make my cachaça cocktails more… elaborate.

When it comes to crafting the perfect cocktail, choosing the right spirit can make all the difference. If you want to spice up your mixology game, you need to try cocktails with cachaça.

I tried, and now I’m a convert.

This Brazilian liquor has a rich history and a unique flavor that can add a tropical twist to any drink.

Where does cachaça come from, and why is it so Brazilian?

Cachaça, or the Brazilian rum, is a distilled spirit distilled from fermented sugar cane juice.

It is the most popular distilled alcoholic beverage in Brazil and has been produced for over 500 years.

And cachaça is such a big deal in Brazil that it's considered our cultural heritage. So, drink it to appreciate our culture.

Why cachaça makes for killer cocktails

Cachaça is a versatile liquor that can be used in various cocktails. It has a distinct flavor that is similar to rum but with a slightly earthier taste.

This unique flavor pairs perfectly with tropical fruits and herbs, making it an excellent base for refreshing cocktails.

Mixing It Up With Cachaça Recipes

Here are some delicious cocktail recipes that use cachaça as their main ingredient. They may not be the best cachaça cocktails around, but I guarantee you'll have a lot of happiness with this tropical drink.

Pro-cachaceiro tip: Some classic cocktails that are traditionally made with other spirits can be easily adapted to include cachaça instead. For example, try making a mojito with cachaça instead of rum or replace gin in a negroni with aged cachaça.

  • 2 teaspoons of sugar
  • Ice cubes

Directions:

  • Muddle the lime wedges and sugar in a glass.

  • Stir well until the drink is chilled.

Batida: The Tropical Cream Dream

Indulge in the smooth, creamy Batida. This fruity cocktail brings you an enchanting combination of cachaça, fruit juice, and sweetened condensed milk. Ingredients:

Caipiroska: The Brazilian Vodka Sipper

Delight in the Caipiroska, a variation of the classic Caipirinha cocktail. It switches up the base spirit to vodka, but can also be made with cachaça for a unique Brazilian flavor. Ingredients:

  • Shake until well mixed and chilled.
  • Strain into a glass and serve.

Finding Your Favorite Cachaça Brand

There are many brands of cachaça to choose from, each with their unique flavor profile. Some popular options include Leblon, Ypióca (my favorite), and Avuá.

Whichever you choose, keep this in mind:

Cachaça comes in two types — unaged (white) and aged (in Brazil, it's called "ouro", gold). Unaged cachaça is great for cocktails that require a stronger, more pungent flavor while aged cachaça is perfect for cocktails that call for a smoother, more refined taste.

Experiment with different brands to find your favorite: you're apt to find one that best suits your cachaça cocktails.

Use your creativity to make your Cachaça inventions.

Don't be afraid to get creative and develop your own cachaça cocktails. Try mixing it with different juices, fruits, and herbs to see what works best. You never know, you might just create the next big cocktail sensation.

Pro-tip: Since cachaça has such a distinct flavor profile, it’s important to mix it with fresh ingredients to ensure the flavor doesn’t overpower the drink. Try using fresh fruit, herbs or spices to balance out the flavors.

Cheers to Cachaça and New Cocktail Adventures

Cachaça is a delicious and versatile liquor that can add a tropical twist to any cocktail.

Whether you're sipping on a classic caipirinha or experimenting with your own creations, cachaça is sure to elevate your mixology game.

So grab a bottle, gather some friends, and cheers to new cocktail adventures with cachaça.
