  • A Checklist to Plan Your Next Trip to Brazil

Are you planning a trip to Brazil?

You're in for a treat!

Brazil is a popular travel destination for foreigners, with its vibrant culture, stunning beaches, and lively music scene.

However, traveling to a new country can be overwhelming, especially if you're unfamiliar with the language and customs.

That's why careful planning and preparation are essential for a smooth and enjoyable trip.

In this step-by-step guide, I’ll take my teacher hat off and put my “informal guide” hat on, walk you through everything you need to know to plan your trip to Brazil and make the most of your experience. Let's get started!

Visa Requirements?

Before packing your bags and heading to Brazil, it's important to check if you need a visa to enter the country.

Visa requirements vary depending on your nationality, so it's essential to research this beforehand.

You can find reliable and up-to-date visa information on the Brazilian Embassy or Consulate website in your home country. For general information, you can check the Brazilian government website about obtaining a visa.

Remember to allow plenty of time to apply for your visa, as the process can take several weeks.

Choose your flight

Depending on your country of origin, you may want to go with one of the low-cost operators or a more established company.

If you’re traveling inside Brazil, you may want to check services like 123milhas or Decolar.com (just for reference, it’s not an ad for them) that help you find cheaper or more convenient flights. You’ll need to understand Portuguese, though.

Plan your itinerary

Brazil is a diverse and exciting destination, and it has something for everyone: from the bustling city life of Sao Paulo to the stunning natural wonders of the Amazon rainforest. That's why planning your itinerary based on your personal preferences is important.

If you're an adventure seeker, plan a trip to Bonito for some incredible snorkeling or to Rio de Janeiro for hang gliding over the city.

And if you're a beach bum, don't miss out on the stunning beaches of Bahia or the vibrant nightlife of Florianopolis.

When planning a trip to Brazil, there are several popular destinations and activities to consider.

Rio de Janeiro is a must-visit for its stunning beaches, iconic landmarks like the Christ the Redeemer statue, and vibrant nightlife.

The Amazon rainforest offers a unique and unforgettable experience, whether you choose to explore on a guided tour (recommended) or venture out on your own (not recommended).

If you're a beach lover, consider checking out the beautiful beaches of Northeast Brazil, such as Jericoacoara or Praia do Forte.

With so much to see and do in Brazil, planning your itinerary carefully is essential to ensure you get all of the country's amazing attractions.

Plan tours beforehand

I highly recommend researching and booking tours or activities in advance to make the most of your trip. This will not only save you time but also help secure availability.

If you don’t speak any Portuguese, I suggest you book your tour with an agency. Unfortunately, I don’t personally know any such agency because when my students come to Brazil, they already speak Portuguese and know someone from here.

But if you want to do all the planning and booking on your own, Booking.com or Airbnb is your friend.

Set a realistic budget

When it comes to traveling to Brazil, setting a realistic budget can make all the difference between a stress-free trip and a financial nightmare.

One way to set a realistic budget is to research the average transportation, food, and accommodation costs in the areas you plan to visit. This will give you a good idea of what to expect and help you allocate your funds accordingly.

Another important factor to consider is your personal financial situation. Just like a ship must be sturdy and well-maintained to withstand the rough seas, your finances must be in order before embarking on a trip.

Make sure you have enough funds saved up for emergencies and unexpected expenses. It's always better to be safe than sorry, especially when you're far from home.

Finally, remember that setting a budget doesn't mean sacrificing fun or adventure. You can still experience the wonders of Brazil without breaking the bank.

By setting a realistic budget and planning ahead, you can ensure that your trip to Brazil is enjoyable and financially sustainable.

If you’re into apps to help you budget your trip, try PocketGuard - this app links all of your financial accounts and cards to it and automatically updates and categorizes your spending in real time. It then tells you what spending money you have with the “in my pocket” feature.

Book your accommodations well in advance

When it comes to planning a trip to Brazil, booking accommodations in advance is like securing a lifeboat on a cruise ship. It's essential for a smooth and enjoyable journey.

Brazil is a popular destination, and during peak travel seasons (alta estação, around June-July and December-February), finding an excellent place to stay can be challenging (and expensive). That's why booking ahead of time is crucial to avoid any last-minute stress.

Fortunately, Brazil offers a variety of accommodation options to suit every budget and preference. If you're looking for a luxurious experience, plenty of five-star hotels will cater to your every need.

Hostels (same word in Portuguese)

If you're on a tight budget, hostels can be an excellent option for meeting other travelers and saving some cash. There are also pousadas, which are a kind of hotel with a more family-friendly vibe.

Vacation rentals (Aluguel por temporada)

If you're traveling with a group or family, vacation rentals can provide a more comfortable and home-like atmosphere.

It's also worth noting that Brazil is a vast country, and each region has its own unique charm and attractions. So, when booking your accommodations, it's essential to consider the areas you plan to visit.

Take any vaccinations you may need

You don't want to go on a safari without the right gear, do you?

Similarly, you don't want to go to Brazil without the proper vaccinations.

Okay, perhaps a safari isn’t the most apt comparison, but anyway, you’ll want to check with a healthcare professional or travel clinic to see which vaccinations are required or recommended.

Some common vaccinations for Brazil include yellow fever and typhoid depending on where you go. These diseases can be severe, so taking the necessary steps to protect yourself is crucial.

You’ll want to check CDC’s website regularly whenever you travel to Brazil.

Learn a bit more about Brazilian culture

Well, this is something you’re already doing if you’re reading our Bitesize Brazil 🙂

Learn a few basic words and phrases in Portuguese

I’ll tell you an "almost" horror story.

An Australian tourist once came to Brazil. He didn't speak a word of Portuguese.

Despite language barriers, he visited the favela and spent time with locals without getting harmed.

He was very, very lucky not to get shot, and he even recognizes it in this article that you can read by clicking here.

You don't want to try your luck.

Learn some basic Brazilian Portuguese. It's not even the hardest language for English speakers. And you can find some free resources on this page.

Purchase travel insurance

When planning a trip to Brazil, one of the most important things to consider is purchasing travel insurance.

It isn’t the most exciting part of planning your dream vacation, but it is essential to protect yourself against unforeseen circumstances. Even if you are a seasoned traveler, unexpected events can happen, and it is better to be safe than sorry.

Travel insurance can cover various things, such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, lost or stolen luggage, and even emergency evacuation. The cost of travel insurance may vary depending on your age, destination, and the length of your trip.

Additionally, it is essential to read the fine print (who does? You do!) and understand the terms and conditions of your travel insurance policy. Some policies may have exclusions or limitations you should know before purchasing. It is also a good idea to keep a copy of your policy and emergency contact information with you during your trip.

Pack some essentials for Brazil

When planning a trip to Brazil, remember to pack some essentials to make your trip more comfortable. Here are a few things you should consider bringing along with you.

  • When planning a trip to Brazil, packing can be overwhelming, but with preparation, it can be made easy.
  • Pack light and breathable clothes like shorts, t-shirts, and sundresses for the warm weather.
  • Remember that some areas in Brazil can get chilly at night (especially in the South or some high-altitude areas), so pack a light jacket or sweater.
  • Remember to pack high-SPF sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.
  • Pack insect repellent to avoid mosquito bites (they’re everywhere).
  • Bring adapters for electrical outlets as Brazil uses a different type of outlet than most countries. And remember that the electrical current varies from region to region: some are 110V, and some are 220V.

Prepare your arrival

As you prepare for your trip to Brazil, it's important to keep in mind that your arrival at the airport can set the tone for the rest of your journey. To make the process as smooth as possible, it's a good idea to do your research ahead of time and familiarize yourself with the customs and immigration procedures. This will help you avoid any unexpected delays or issues upon arrival.

Once you've cleared customs and immigration, you'll need to figure out how to get to your accommodation. Luckily, there are a number of transportation options available to you. If you're looking for convenience and don't mind paying a little extra, you can rent a car or take a taxi (just make sure it’s an official one, as taxi scammers abound in the principal international airports).

Here are some scams you’ll want to avoid.

Alternatively, if you're traveling on a budget, you may want to consider taking public transportation, such as a bus or a train. But I would advise against it, unless you’re a seasoned traveler with excellent language skills who can blend in.

In conclusion, planning a trip to Brazil doesn't have to be daunting.

With a little preparation and the right mindset, you'll be able to enjoy all that this beautiful country has to offer.

Remember to pack light, protect your skin from the sun, and be aware of the potential scams, especially if you don’t speak Portuguese.

Whether you're exploring the bustling streets of Rio de Janeiro or relaxing on the beaches of Bahia, Brazil will surely leave you with unforgettable memories.

So, grab your passport, pack your bags, and get ready for an adventure of a lifetime.
